On the 13th Day of Christmas...
Wednesday, January 06, 2010
Here's one final gift I wanted to put out there today for the MUGEN community as we say goodbye to Christmas 2009. Over the past couple of years I've created a few tools in Visual Basic 6 ('cuz the Old Skool is the best school) that have been useful to me when I need something a little more lightweight than Fighter Factory, MEE, or MCM. Last night, I realized that there might be other people in MUGEN-land (developers and otherwise) that might find value in them, so I decided to share.
MUGENSound
This is a simple tool for previewing and extracting .wav audio files from a MUGEN .snd file. It's useful to me when I'm coding up something quick in a text editor and can't remember the group and number of a specific sound effect I need and added earlier (it's also useful for dumping .wav files for sound effects of moves that Parasite has permission of their creators to steal & copy, which is how I personally use it most often). Just click the folder button to tell it the path to the .snd file, and it will populate the list box with all of the sounds it contains, identified by (group, number). Highlight a single sound and hit the single-triangle play button, and it will play that sound. Hit the triple-arrow button, and it will start to play all of the sounds in the list (the X button cancels the process). The disk button gives you the option to save the sound file as a .wav that you can use for other things (provided of course that you have permission if you're going to use it in your own MUGEN creations).
AIRCheck
I built this tool in a speed run last night to help me track down some "missing sprite" issues in my recent Parasite release. If you have characters that appear to have missing sprites, i.e. they disappear during moves where you don't expect them to be invisible, than this tool will help you catch them. Give it the path to the .sff and .air files, and it will chew through them both, and give you a list of all the sprites referenced in the .air file that don't exist in the .sff, along with the animation definition where the reference occurs, so you can easily go in with your text editor of choice and hand-edit the animation to remove or correct the offending lines. It took a few hours to write, but helped me solve Parasite's sprite problems in a matter of minutes instead of the hours of tedious searching it would have required otherwise.
MUGENFont
This is just a quick and dirty tool I wrote to build a MUGEN .fnt file, given the appropriately-formatted .pcx and text files. Honestly there are other tools that do this better (Font Editor, for example), but this one is mine so I thought I'd include it anyway.
Downloads
Eventually, I'll add a "tools" section to this site, or add a blurb for this on the Add-Ons page. For now, though, you can download all three of my MUGEN dev tools right here (download size: 40 kb).
(note that you may need to install the 1MB VB 6 runtimes, which you can get here, unless you already have them on your machine from another VB app. If the tools don't run when you extract them from the archive, install the runtime and try again)

As this year's 12 Days of Christmas event rolls to a close, the ScruffyDragon team and the MSH2 project present this gift: Captain America (Bucky Barnes) beta by Verz, Alienmorph & Magus. They've really poured a lot of time and effort into this guy, making him play VERY differently from the original Steve Rogers Cap. I like him a lot (his version of the Final Justice hyper is especially awesome) and I think you will too.
You can download Captain America Bucky, and all the rest of our Christmas releases, at the ScruffyDragon.com.
Happy 3 Kings Day, and have a very happy 2010 to come!

Tuesday, January 05, 2010

This morning McCready and Wucash have released their stage for Sandman, Nuclear Power Plant. I like it a lot.
We are planning one more release for today, but it hasn't gone live yet. Look for it later tonight when I get home from work.

In a move surprising all of us at ScruffyDragon, Wucash chose yesterday to release his completed version of Ghost Rider! The new version boasts a TON of specials and hypers over the previous release, plus enough intros and winposes to keep you hitting F5 over and over again just to see them all. It's truly a Wucash-quality work of art.

Today, my fellow ScruffyDragon Seth Zankuten uploaded an awesome video showcasing his progress upgrading and play-balancing characters for our officially-unofficial (i.e. "Please Disney and Warner don't sue us") "DC vs Marvel" game. It shows off all of the updates he's given to our Iron Man and Green Lantern characters, particularly in regards to hit sparks, super combos, and Amalgam hypers. If you care about our game project at all, you definitely want to check it out at Blip.tv, or click through here:

Today Wucash released his Golden Gate stage for Starfire, which he made with X-Boy's help. Like most of Wucash's stages, it's got two levels, and is very well-crafted and fun. You can get it here.

Today I'm releasing a "release candidate" version of Parasite 2.0. Thanks go to all the ScruffyDragons that have helped me, but especially to my new teammate and partner, Jet the Phoenix, who was responsible for so much of the graphical update in this version. He now sports a full smart palette (with TONS of alternates available in the folder), lots of custom animations and basic moves for specific power sets, and a metric ton of new power sets and fixed/improved moves for existing power sets. It's way more than I can even put in the readme file, but make sure you read it anyway to see what characters he supports, and the implementation status on their power sets.
Note that not everything is done yet; I'm sure there are still a ton of bug fixes to do, and there are still more missing moves than I would like, but it's certainly a giant leap in the right direction.
You can download Parasite v2 RC1 here, and afterward you can go to ScruffyDragon to discuss this release.
Happy New Year! 3 more days to go!

I hate editing a smart palette on get-hit and MUGEN-required sprites! >:(
That is all.
No, seriously, there is a 9th-Day release, it's mine, and it's coming. Hopefully later this afternoon, although I know it's pushing evening for some of my readers. Patience! I hope the wait will be worth it.

Today Lumina & Magus are releasing a preview version of their Pocket Zangief character. He's a combination of MvSF/SF4 style, and had other cool "smart" palettes (e.g. Bane, Raiden, Haggar) that will in a future release get their own special modes of play. A ton of fun in a small package, go get him here.

Today Wucash is releasing his new stage for Namor, SHIELD Atlantis Outpost! As with yesterday's post, I'm writing this Saturday night and scheduling it to auto-post for me on time, so I don't have a link yetso I had to come back and add the link after the fact, but you can find it on the front page of ScruffyDragon.com.
(note: also like yesterday's post, there's a small chance that something may go wrong with the release, and you won't see it on the portal by the time this post is uploaded. If that's the case, have some patience and I'm sure you'll see it post soon)

Monday, December 28, 2009

Today Sic-1 and Zvitor are releasing their latest collaboration, Namor! I'm writing this post early and scheduling it to auto-post for me on time, so I don't have a link yetI had this auto-posting, but have come back and added a link to the release thread, but you can find it on the front page of ScruffyDragon.com, too.
He's already a very full-featured character, sporting 4 special attacks and 3 hypers, which Parasite has already figured out he wants to steal:

The reason I'm writing this post early is because today I'm in the hospital getting some minor sinus surgery done. I doubt I'll have an internet connection at all today, and very likely won't feel like getting online anyway, so I may miss a day or two here... hence me posting these things early.
(note: there's a small chance that something may go wrong with the release, and you won't see it on the portal by the time this post is uploaded. If that's the case, have some patience and I'm sure you'll see it post soon)

Today we're releasing something new and different from the ScruffyDragon team -- a demo of our first RPG! Headed up by Kojunho, the Legend of Gohan is based in the DragonBall Z world. A lot of work has gone into it, so even though it's just a beta, it's pretty cool. You can download the Legend of Gohan demo here.

Today Acaderm and Magus released a new character from their Pocket World game, Mustapha (from the Capcom game Cadillacs & Dinosaurs). If you like pockets, or if you have fond memories of the old C&D games, you'll want to check it out.

And, in totally unrelated news, tonight I gave Parasite support for Trexrell's Vixen character beta, which was released as part of CVG United's runup to our 12Days event. She's still a beta, but there's some really promising stuff in there. Definitely worth a look.

Yesterday Useless, Toxin & Magus released a beta of their Scorpion/Venom (Mac Gargan) character. You should check it out, it's pretty awesome, and plays totally differently from Eddie Brock Venom.
Even Parasite likes him:

"12 days" wrap-up
Sunday, January 11, 2009
Forgot to post days 11 & 12 here on my blog, but for anyone not following the ScruffyDragon news page, here they are:
Titans Tower stage, by Wucash
And here's my follow-up post from over at ScruffyDragon.com:
To round out this year's "12 days of MUGEN" event, we as a team really wanted to knock everybody's socks off. As many of you suspected, we wanted the 12th gift to be... DCvsMarvel Phase 1.
Alas, although we've made tremendous progress toward this goal over the past 6 weeks, it's just not quite finished yet. So last night we had a team meeting to discuss the situation, and the unanimous decision was to wait until it's done, instead of slapping something together that wasn't truly a GAME experience, but merely a collection of unbalanced characters and mismatched effects & stages. We figure there are plenty of places within the MUGEN community where you can go for that sort of thing, and if the ScruffyDragon brand stands for anything at all, it stands for quality over quantity. As the old saying goes, "good things come to those who wait." ;)
So, where does that leave us? Well, it leaves you as fans 9 characters and 3 stages richer. It leaves the ScruffyDragon team revitalized and excited about building a truly awesome Phase 1 experience. And it leaves us all quite a bit closer to Phase 1 than we were 12 days ago. As for a new release date, I'm going to have to hold off on that for the moment because I don't have the latest status reports from Wucash and Seth to know what's still left on their respective plates. But I can say this: I see no reason at present why it can't be done before the Scruffyversary. How soon before, depends on each team member's real life situations, and will be different for each of us. Best advice I can give you is to keep watching the news section here; there are sure to be some other releases coming up in the near future, and Phase 1 within the next few months.
As always, thank you all for your continued support. We don't do this for money, or really even for glory or attention. We do it for fun, and for the love of these two great superhero universes. You all help keep that magic alive for us.

Bobstarsky & I proudly present, after a long incubation period and hiatus, Savage Hulk!
This version doesn't have everything that the Hulk in the final game will have, but he's got 3 finished specials and three hypers, which should be more than enough to stand up to most other characters:
- SPECIALS
- Hulk Bash (charge B, F + kick)
- Hulk Smash (D, DF, F + punch)
- Road Rage (Hold down and press all 3 punch buttons to grab some asphalt... then press any attack button to throw it)
- Hulk Smash (hyper) (D, DF, F + 2 punches)
- Thunderclap (D, DB, B + 2 punches)
- Rage mode (D,DB,B + punch and kick of equal strength)

Merry Christmas to one and all! (even those of you that don't celebrate / aren't Christians / etc). My fellow ScruffyDragons are helping me to continue the tradition I started last year, and today is the first day of the "12 Days of MUGEN"... so, here's your gift, courtesy of Lumina's sprites and my code, Pocket Ice:
She's got most of what my "big Ice" has, and a few small tweaks here and there as well. Still more Lumina and I would like to add to her, but I think she makes a fine entry for today's gift. I hope you all think so too.
For now, you can download her at my site; I can't upload to the SD server from my mother-in-law's house so one of the other Dragons will have to do it for me: Pocket Ice v0.9
Enjoy!

- Hitsparks by Loganir & SethZankuten
- Lifebars by McCready & Buyog
- Title logo by Sei
- Programmed by Magus & Buyog
Go get it in the Add-ons section, here.
On a final note: thanks for all the feedback and support over the past two weeks. This turned out to be a much bigger commitment than I expected it to be, and you've all been very understanding when delays have occurred. Now, go have some fun! :)

The 11th Day of Christmas
Saturday, January 05, 2008

Sorry this took all day. Day 12 is now gonna be pushed back, but is still coming, either tonight or possibly tomorrow evening if I fall asleep at the keyboard again! =P
Lex currently has two specials, but the second, Stiletto Blades, isn't finished yet. I can't make the sprites look right and the movements aren't either. I'll drop it for a few days then come back and give you guys Alpha 3 sometime later in the month.
Anyway, for now, enjoy. One more day to go!

Okay, first, apologies for the lateness. Life is busy 'round these parts. Also an apology that this video doesn't show off as much as I'd hoped it would... that's just the way it ended up falling; a follow-up is forthcoming.
All of that aside, here's gift 10 in my blitz: a short video showcasing some of the Amalgam hypers that will be in the game (note that none of them are 100% finalized, though):

The 8th Day of Christmas
Wednesday, January 02, 2008

Okay, so when I first thought about doing a simple remix of Marrow for part of the "12 days" blitz, I thought it would be a simple matter of removing the tagteam code and changing out the MvC2 sparks for the DCvM effects my characters use. Imagine my surprise when I found MUCH deeper problems. -_-
When Ryou Win took over my beta, he almost completely redid the AIR file, the state files, the command file & AI. And none of the changes he's made am I happy with. I thought about throwing together something half-baked just to meet my promise of 12 releases in 12 days, but then I thought better of it... I *will* be redoing Marrow, and soon, but the work to be done goes far, FAR beyond what I can do today. So, sorry about this, no Day 8 yet, but Day 9 will go on as planned. Look for more info on the Marrow remix over the coming weeks.

Tuesday, January 01, 2008

Sorry this one's coming late in the evening; looks like the 12-days releases will be in the evenings from here on out.
Anyway, here's Day 7's gift: an update to Ice that I've been working on for the past few months. Here's what she's got:
- Added Ice Shield special (F,D,DF + P)
- Added new stance by Wucash & BobStarsky (thanks, guys!)
- Changed standing hard kick (close range) to a launcher
- Added better air comboing
Go get Ice here.
As with all the other chars I've released in this 12-days blitz, please feel free to post any feedback you have in her release thread, here.

Day 6 of my little event is actually happening on Day 7 due to weather, family, and other complications.

Hal patch release
Sunday, December 30, 2007
I've uploaded a new version of Hal Jordan, based on initial feedback from users of the initial 1.0 version. It includes the following fixes (v1.1 was uploaded Thursday but I forgot to mention it)- 27 Dec 2007: 1.1
Changed black palette to be more like a "black lantern" might be (i.e. dead)
Changed DCvsMarvel-style portraits out for ones that fit a normal screenpack
- 28 Dec 2007: 1.2
Tweaked standing & crouching basics and ground combos (sped up the regular moves slightly too)
Fixed forward dash and added a back dash/hop
Added forward air dash
Added AI from ThePacifist; I'll beef it up later, but this is better than what he had before.
Tweaked Ring Slinging trail effects
Fixed Plasma Sphere infinite (and added a fadeaway/disruption anim at the end)
Have fun!

The 5th Day of Christmas
Saturday, December 29, 2007

Sorry this one's coming late in the day; Saturday tends to be a pretty busy day around my house. I was also struggling with the new "pope lobo" animation, until BobStarsky bailed me out last minute. That guy's a terrific pinch-hitter! :D
Anyway, here's day 5's gift: an update to Lobo that I've been cooking up for a while now. Here's what it's got:
- fixed the AI bug that caused him to spam the MM Airlines move
- improved AI for Main Men clones (they're pretty vicious now)
- tweaked AI on a few other small particulars
- fixed the winKO flash so that it doesn't (shouldn't anyway) ever get triggered twice on a win
- minor cosmetic fixes to a bunch of sprites (thanks to Jeff for most of these!)
- replaced the gun-reload animation with a better one created by the ever-talented BobStarsky
- added "Pope Lobo" intro w/ space dolphin (thanks to BobStarsky for help with the anim!)
- added damage dampener to BFG hyper
Go get Lobo here.

The 4th Day of Christmas
Friday, December 28, 2007

The 12 Days of Christmas continue with the eponymous leader of the Sinestro Corps. As I originally stated when I started this WIP, I'm going to be trying something a little different with him. Since anyone is open to contribute to Sinestro, I feel everyone should have access to him as he progresses. So expect frequent alphas as I progress... consider it something of an experiment into a different way of thinking about MUGEN WIPs. Anyway, enjoy this VERY early taste of what's to come... like with Elektra, this is Alpha 0.1. Unlike Elektra, though, he's not that far along yet... what you saw in the YouTube video yesterday is pretty much all he's got so far. <_<
Go get Sinestro here.
As with the other chars I've released in this 12-days blitz, please feel free to post any feedback you have over at the ScruffyDragon forum (the release thread is here). This is ESPECIALLY true this time, because the more people contribute ideas & sprites, the faster he'll progress. ;)

The 3rd Day of Christmas
Thursday, December 27, 2007

Forgot to post this earlier. Mixing it up a little, day 3 isn't a release, it's a new YouTube video. This time, it's a tease of Larramones' and my Sinestro WIP:
He's progressing fairly well: about half of his basic movement animations, 3 standing punches, and a special move. But that said, he can't hold his own against Hal Jordan (yet), so for the purposes of the video I've turned off Hal's AI.

The 2nd Day of Christmas
Wednesday, December 26, 2007

The 12 Days of Christmas roll on with this little after-dinner mint. XFields and Beja, who did the original sprite work on Daredevil's girlfriend here, have decided to go a different direction with her design. That left all of these sprites without a proper home, which I thought was just sad, so I've decided to finish her. For now, enjoy this VERY early taste of what's to come... I call it Alpha 0.1, which should hopefully tell you how far she is from finished. That said, I wanted to show her off and give you all something new for your MUGEN select screens. Go get her here.
Note: She's nowhere close to a 1.0 public release, so there's TONS of stuff missing, moves that need tweaking, and yes, bugs. But for now, enjoy, and post any feedback you have to my email, or over at the release thread on the ScruffyDragon forum.

12 Days of Christmas, Plus a few new WIPs

2. I've picked up two new character WIPs, Mandarin (initial sprites by McCready) and Invisible Woman (initial sprites by DocOck4MUGEN). Check 'em out:
